As a former CIA officer, I’ve seen this in action firsthand in several developing countries around the world and everyday in my home country of the United States. Politicians weaponize their charisma and maintain a grip on constituents for their own selfish needs under the cover of leadership.
An effective politician of this type, like a covert operative or a cult leader, is a master storyteller. They create narratives that resonate emotionally with their constituents, framing themselves as heroes or saviors. This emotional resonance can often override logical argumentation.
Politicians who weaponize charisma use emotional mirroring, and confident conviction to create powerful bonds with voters, making their claims and promises seem credible to draw in supporters. They create facades that make them appear as heroes (or victims), reflect their constituents’ emotions and values, and project an aura of certainty that lends credence to their claims.
However, these charismatic tactics can also be used to maintain influence even in the face of obvious falsehoods. Politicians may repeat lies until they seem true, distort facts to make people question their own understanding of reality (a technique known as “gaslighting”), and discredit critics or alternative information sources to maintain their narrative. They maintain influence even when disseminating deception, using repetition to create an “illusory truth effect,” to make people question their own perceptions, and discrediting opposition to deflect criticism. These are the same tactics used by cults.
Diversify your sources of information to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the issues. By being emotionally intelligent, you can learn to recognize when a politician is trying to manipulate your emotions and separate these appeals from the facts to hold politicians accountable for their actions, not just their words.
The world of politics is a complex arena where charisma often plays a pivotal role. But with awareness and critical thinking, voters can see through the charismatic facade and make informed decisions based on facts rather than charm.
