The “endowment effect” is a psychological phenomenon where people ascribe more value to things simply because they own them. In the field of tradecraft, exploiting this bias can be an effective way to manipulate a target into compliance.

The key is to give your target something of nominal value — a piece of information, a small favor, or a token gift, for example. Once the target owns this “endowment,” they are more likely to overvalue it, which creates a psychological indebtedness towards you. The objective is to leverage this sense of obligation to compel the target to reciprocate in a way that serves your mission objectives.

To deploy this technique in an operation, the first step is research / reconnaissance. Learn what the target values or may perceive as a valuable endowment. This could be insider information, a personal favor, or a material gift that caters to their interests. Once the endowment is identified and given, confirm that the target has indeed psychologically ‘taken ownership’ of it.

Lastly, make your move for compliance carefully. Time this for when the target is most susceptible to your influence, ideally when they have recently acknowledged the value of your endowment. The request for compliance should be phrased in such a way that it feels like a natural extension of the initial endowment, allowing the target to feel as though they are simply returning a favor rather than being manipulated.

If executed with finesse, your target will not only comply but may also remain an asset for future operations, under the continuing influence of the initial endowment.
