The Boomerang Warrior-X by Raytheon is a man-portable shooter detection system designed to enhance the situational awareness of dismounted soldiers by pinpointing the origin of hostile gunfire. Developed by Raytheon BBN Technologies, this system is an evolution of the vehicle-mounted Boomerang III system and was first fielded to the U.S. armed forces in 2011.
In addition to providing highly extended situational awareness, this system is designed to be lightweight, durable, and easy to use, making it ideal for use in a variety of military and tactical environments.
The Warrior-X is designed to be integrated into tactical vests, weighing just 12 ounces. This makes it an ideal solution for dismounted troops who require mobility without compromising their ability to detect threats.
The system employs a cluster of audio sensors to detect the sound of gunfire. It calculates the shooter’s position by analyzing the projectile’s speed, trajectory, and flight path. This data is then displayed on a small screen, providing soldiers with real-time information about the direction and distance of the threat.
The Boomerang Warrior-X is integrated with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), a situational awareness tool used by the U.S. military. This integration allows for the transmission of shooter location data across the network, enabling coordinated responses from all connected units.
When in the field, it operates using a network of audio sensors that detect the unique acoustic signatures of gunfire. When a shot is fired, the system captures the muzzle blast and the supersonic shockwave of the bullet using multiple microphones positioned around the user. These sensors measure the time difference of arrival of these sounds at each microphone, allowing the system to triangulate the shooter’s location by calculating the direction and distance of the origin point.
This data is then processed and displayed on a wrist-mounted screen, providing the soldier with the azimuth (direction) and range (distance) of the shooter. Additionally, the system compensates for the soldier’s movement to maintain accurate tracking of the shooter’s position in real-time, ensuring continuous situational awareness during dynamic combat scenarios.
The Boomerang Warrior-X has been deployed in various operational theaters, including Iraq and Afghanistan. It has also been selected for field trials by the UK Ministry of Defence due to its effectiveness in providing individual soldiers with enhanced protection and awareness capabilities.
Raytheon BBN Technologies has secured contracts to supply the Boomerang Warrior-X to multiple nations, including an undisclosed Gulf country, highlighting its growing adoption and the system’s reliability on the battlefield.
The Boomerang Warrior-X is a sophisticated shooter detection system that provides crucial, real-time information to dismounted troops, enhancing their ability to respond to hostile fire effectively. Its lightweight design, integration with tactical networks, and immediate threat alerts make it an invaluable tool for modern military operations.
This is military tech and is not available for civilian use. Its development and deployment are subject to government regulations and restrictions, and it’s designed for use by trained military personnel in combat situations.
