The concept of “chokepoints” refers to geographic or situational constrictions where your range of movement is significantly limited, thereby increasing vulnerability. These areas, such as narrow alleys, enclosed parking lots, or dead-end streets, offer the enemy enhanced control over your motion, and a heightened ability to interdict or capture. It’s effectively trap zones.
It’s a universal law of tradecraft: control the terrain, and you control the outcome. A failure to navigate chokepoints effectively could jeopardize your safety. So while navigating the streets while on foot, identify chokepoints in order to avoid them or if unavoidable, strategize.
To mitigate risks associated with chokepoints, you must have a two-pronged strategy: avoidance and maneuverability. Be on the look out or pre-identify potential chokepoints so you can bypass them or, if unavoidable, traverse them strategically with minimized exposure or by being prepared to engage.
